How to Start?
Do yourself a favour, get a couple of good recommendations from us VTers in the Forum or better still, grab a Penangite and cajole him to reveal to you the island’s best grub. If you’re really lazy, you can just print out my food list. You haven’t been to Penang if you haven’t tried their:

1)Char Kway Teow – Flat Rice Noodles fried with Prawns, Sausages,Bean Sprouts and Lard, yes lard. So this is definitely not kosher or halal!

2)Lor Bak – A schizophrenic selection of fried pork sausage, squid, beancurd and other yummies.

3)Penang Laksa – A Delicious Seafood Broth Noodle Soup flavoured with a dollop of prawn paste, shredded fish and fragrant herbs.

4)Tau Sah Piah - A sweet flaky confectionary with green bean paste.

Best spot to find good Laksa..

Advantages to company:

Less personal touch – harder to sell
Fraud – company loses money

Quicker than discussing with travel agent

Look at different companies and chose cheapest

Hacker may intercept data – steal money

Tioman Island is a small island located 32 km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang, and is some 39 km long and 12 km wide. It has eight main villages, the largest and most populous being Kampung Tekek Ikan Kekek Mak Iloi-iloi in the north. The densely forested island is sparsely inhabited, and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a popular scuba diving spot. There are also a lot of resorts and chalets around the island.

About 36 nautical mile off Malaysia’s east coast lies Pulau Tioman, or Tioman Island a tear-shape paradise. An enduring and tranquil island, Tioman Island boasts miles and miles of white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees, charming villages and friendly people. Its crystal clear water promise spectacular marine life and colourful coral gardens. The striking profile of the twin peaks of Gunung Nenek Semukut provides a markable landmark to this beautiful island reputed to be one of the most beautiful and idyllic islands in the world.

Its beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie, South Pacific as Bali Hai. In the 1970s, TIME Magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands.

Apart from its diverse marine life, the inland rainforest area, encompassing approximately 12,383 hectares, in Tioman is a strictly enforced nature reserve. There are several protected species of mammals on the island, including the Binturong, Long-tailed Macaque, Slow Loris, Black Giant Squirrel, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Mouse deer, Brush-tailed Porcupine, and Common Palm Civet, from a total of 45 species of mammals and 138 species of birds, including the majestic Frigatebird. Moreover, Tioman has species that are endemic to its shores. The soft-shelled turtle and the Tioman walking catfish are both unique and can be seen on rainforest walks.

GETTING THERE

The island is served by ferries from the Malaysian mainland, and a propeller plane service by Berjaya Air from the Seletar Airport in Singapore and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Kuala Lumpur.

The island is accessible by boat from the jetties in Tanjung Gemok and Mersing. The ride takes about one hour and thirty minutes, depending on sea conditions. Tioman is also accessible from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal in Singapore. Journey time is four hours and thirty minutes.

Second, The stress and excitement of travel can make you more likely to get sick, but if you follow a few simple tips, you’re more likely to stay healthy throughout your trip — and your trip will definitely be more enjoyable. The good news is that as a teen, your immune system is as strong as an adult’s, but lack of sleep and a poor diet can make it easier for you to become sick.

The first thing you should do if you’re heading overseas is to find out what kinds of vaccinations you’ll need in advance because different countries have different requirements. In the United States, contact your doctor or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a list of necessary vaccinations. You’ll want to allow plenty of time for this step in case you need to get vaccines that require more than one dose.

This is a top of the class hotel – prime location (just next to KLCC), good restaurants, good service and comfortable rooms. But being good means you have to pay more. It is not cheap and meant more for business travelers. Do try out the Chinese restaurant because it is one of the best in town and has won several awards.

Accommodation is the small wooden chalets that dot the place, tucked cosily amongst the palm trees and flowers. The whole island is finely arranged…so natural and beautiful from every viewpoint. Quite a lot of peacocks can be seen around.

–How to get there?
I took a coach from KL to Mersing at night and arrived at the small harbour too early:( Forturnately, after staggering with my luggage in the darkness for 20 minutes I found a tiny inn and fell asleep right after a shower. The next morning, I caught a jet boat sent from the resort on Rawa and began the wonderful time

I think Palau Kapas is Malaysia’s best kept secret and I’m almost tempted not to shout about how good it is for fear it will change and lose its charm. I have met some of the most wonderful, welcoming, warm hearted and kind people ever, both Malaysians and dutch that work here.

I have also been lucky enough to witness on 2 separate occasions, a green turtle crawling up the beach to lay her eggs. It happens in the small hours of the morning and once I was woken but the second time I was still in the bar! Sadly because I don’t have my camera the photos I have put on here are not of me but I was there and I loved it. It is really inportant that everyone remains silent whilst she digs a hole in the sand, else she will get scared and flee. When she is entirely content and ready to lay is when she goes into an almost trance and you are allowed to go forward and watch up close. Close enough to touch, to stroke her back and to see the tears in her eyes. It felt like a scene from National Geographic, and I feel privileged to have been in the right place at the right time. I also was allowed to be midwife and collect the eggs as she laid, words cannot explain how it made me feel. The first turtle laid only 39 eggs, they think she was a first time mum. However the second was twice as big and laid almost 100 eggs. No photos the second time but I will always have my memories.

I have had the most amazing time for the last 13 days and will without doubt return in the not to distant future.

I stayed at Kapas Beach Chalet (KBC), joint dutch/malay run accommodation. I had my own ‘A’ frame chalet on the beach which cost RM60 a night, which is about 8 pound 50 pence. It was very basic with just a bed, a small table and 2 chairs. The bathroom was a toilet and shower and strangely no sink, very weird when it came to brushing my teeth! Once I’d put up my mozzie net, found a home for everything and had my first cup of coffee I felt like I never wanted to leave. I spent ages just sitting on the balcony just watching the world go by, my brain in neutral.

Most days I would along walk all the 5 beaches on Kapas, which took 30 minutes end to end, so I would do it 3 or 4 times. I also climbed the rocks, went snorkling, did a jungle trek with Khalid the local barman and chef and went swimming. Long beach was my favourite as everyday I had the beach to myself and I also found the most amazing shells there too. I have attempted to make jewellry from them but I am not very good.

I also wish to say a big thank you to everyone on the island for making me feel so welcome and going out of their way to help me in any way they could.
